Help us reach our $50,000 fundraising goal by Fred Korematsu Day on January 30, 2012! Here are three reasons to support our education program this year:

  1. Our kits just got cheaper: Last year’s inaugural kits cost us $40 to produce and distribute. This year, we’ve streamlined our kits so that we can get them to classrooms for only $20!
  2. Your donation can be matched: Your donation is eligible to receive a 100% dollar-for-dollar match from a challenge grant the Asian Law Caucus (our parent organization) has received!
  3. We have even cooler gifts this year:

Donate $20 to help send 1 Korematsu teaching kit to a classroom.

Donate $100 to send 5 teaching kits and receive the Korematsu Institute’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Civil Rights 2012 wall calendar! With 12 months of incredible images and 65 significant dates (ie when was the first Asian American Heritage Week? What day did the SF State Ethnic Studies strike end?), you’ll be reminded throughout the year of the challenges and triumphs that brought us to where we are today. Reproduction of photograph that will be officially included in the National Portrait Gallery on Feb 2, 2012

Donate $1,000 to help us send 50 teaching kits and receive 1) our Asian American and Pacific Islander Civil Rights 2012 wall calendar and 2) a beautifully framed reproduction of the Fred Korematsu photograph that was officially included in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s permanent civil rights exhibit in February 2012. Fred became the first Asian American included in the exhibit. Hang this piece of history in your home, school or office!

There are nearly 10,000 public schools in California alone. In order to develop additional Korematsu teaching materials and distribute them to more classrooms in California and around the country, we need your support today! Individual, foundation and corporate support of the Korematsu Institute play a critical role in strengthening our education programs. We count on donations from people like you to continue our work.

Cy Pres Awards
The Korematsu Institute at the Asian Law Caucus is an appropriate recipient of Cy Pres funds because our core mission is to promote education on civil rights issues.

Cy Pres is a doctrine and practice of distributing unclaimed class action funds to programs that have a nexus to the underlying purpose of the litigation. In class action lawsuits, if there is to be a payment of damages to class members, a fund is created. After class members’ claims are paid, there is often an amount remaining. Judges and class counsel can recommend that these residual funds be distributed to the “next best” use.

By directing Cy Pres and other court awards to the Korematsu Institute at the Asian Law Caucus – including court-approved settlements, sanction awards and criminal restitution –the courts and attorneys can fund educational programs that help safeguard the civil rights of all.

The Korematsu Institute received its first Cy Pres award, from Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, in 2010. It has enabled our organization to expand our programs and further spread Korematsu’s legacy in order to protect individuals whose civil liberties are being threatened today.

If you have questions about Cy Pres or other court awards, or if you want to name the Korematsu Institute at the Asian Law Caucus as a prospective recipient of such awards, please contact: Audee Kochiyama-Holman, 415-896-1701, ext. 131, audeekh [at] asianlawcaucus.org
