Fred Korematsu Day

We held our 2022 Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution celebration on January 30, 2022! This virtual event included an educational webinar, Dispelling the Myths of COVID-19, and the presentation of the inaugural Fred Korematsu Social Justice Award to actor, producer, and activist, Daniel Dae Kim, who has spoken up for the AAPI community in the face of historic xenophobia, advocated for equality, and social justice, and promoted the use of COVID-19 vaccines to keep our communities safe. We want to thank our event partners, APIAHF and APIAVote, our host Rosie Nguyen and guests Dr. Julie Lam and Tracy Lam-Hine, and everyone who attended, sent in webinar questions, and joined us in honoring Fred Korematsu’s legacy. We hope to see you in person for next year’s 2023 celebration!

In 2010, the Governor of California signed the legislative bill establishing Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution on January 30 in perpetuity. This is the first state-wide day in U.S. history named after an Asian American. Korematsu’s growing legacy continues to inspire people across diverse communities and demonstrates the importance of speaking up to fight injustice. The Fred T. Korematsu Institute is leading efforts to recognize Fred Korematsu in other states and also achieve a national Fred Korematsu Day to honor his legacy as a civil rights hero for all Americans. The overarching vision of the Korematsu Institute is to uphold all human and civil rights by inspiring people to, as Fred Korematsu said, “stand up for what is right.” In the fall of 2021, the Korematsu Institute started a new #GetVaccinated project educating educators, students, and the public. And working with the Asian and Pacific Islander Health Forum (APIAHF) to engage AA & NH/PI communities in COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations. The APIAHF was a partner in presenting the 2022 virtual Fred Korematsu Day celebration. The event featured a webinar dispelling the myths about COVID-19 with live interpretations in Mandarin and Cantonese. The virtual 2022 Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution took place at 4PM PST | 6PM CST | 7PM EST on January 30, 2022. This celebration was recorded and is available on the Fred T. Korematsu Institute Facebook page.
