Korematsu Institute Statement on the #STOPASIANHATE Virtual Day of Action & Healing – 3/26
“Stand up for what is right and don’t be afraid to speak up!” – Fred T. Korematsu
This is what Fred Korematsu represents. He is the face of all Asian American groups. At the Korematsu Institute, we condemn the hate rhetoric and violence against the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) communities and all communities based on race, gender, religion, sexuality, immigration status, or ethnicity.
Today we are observing #StopAsianHate Virtual Day of Action and Healing in the wake of the shootings in Georgia that killed eight individuals, including six Asian women at work, and also the almost 3,800 anti-Asian hate incidents that have been recorded across the country ranging from vicious, racist language to violent, unprovoked attacks on the elderly to murder.
Words matter. Language matters. History matters. And we are at a pivotal moment in our collective history with an opportunity to take action against xenophobia and discrimination. To take action against racist language, misinformation, and hate speech, to take action against hate, and to have the uncomfortable conversations that are necessary to secure a future of respect, understanding, and safety in ALL of our communities.
And we firmly believe education can help create a world where racial equity, social justice, and human rights for all are the norm. We stand in solidarity with the AAPI community and all communities. We provide Digital Curriculum Toolkits to help educators educate the next generation. We encourage people to speak up when they see a wrong in the world. We stand up for what is right
In solidarity,
Karen Korematsu
