KI Reflects on Service and Pearl Harbor
December 7, 1941, was a day of loss. 2,403 people lost their lives and 1,178 were injured in the attack on Pearl Harbor leaving an indelible mark on our collective history. The veterans of Pearl Harbor had the unique experience of the day up close and had to move past the shock and horror of the surprise attack and snap into action along with the other 35,000 servicemembers stationed at Pearl Harbor.
After that day, the final gears turned that brought the United States fully into World War II. But while we should reflect on the loss, the destruction, and the resulting horrors of that day, we should also reflect on the soldiers, sailors, nurses, and everyday heroes who stepped into action. While Pearl Harbor was rebuilt, the day has never been forgotten. Today we remember and honor all those U.S. military service people who lost lives and were injured on Decemeber 7, 1942. We thank their families as well for their sacrifice.
